Puffins: Cute to Catalyst

Role:
Field Recording, Audio Capture

Collaborating and handling location audio capture at the stunning Bempton Cliffs, to tell the story of the puffin for BirdNote’s Threatened podcast. ‘A podcast about answering the call to protect the birds and places we love’.

Situated on the spectacular Yorkshire coast, Bempton is home to one of the UK's top wildlife spectacles. Around half a million seabirds gather here between March and October to raise a family on towering chalk cliffs that overlook the North Sea.

My role was to provide the recording equipment and operate this to capture as much audio content as possible from the moment we arrived. We were lucky with calm weather and little wind which was essential for clean recordings on a clifftop.

Myself and main producer Paul were guided round the site with two staff members from the RSPB reserve. We captured interviews from their wealth of knowledge and from willing visitors; who were up for sharing why they loved puffins and coming to visit the site. Further remote interviews were done on various platforms.

The main microphone setup for capturing the birds on the cliffs was an ORTF stereo rig, with x2 LOM Uši Pro and a Zoom H5. Quicker access recordings were achieved with a Sony PMC D-100. Interviewees were captured with a Sennheiser MK416 and Paul also had a Zoom F1 with lav mic to directly capture him asking questions in case we needed them in post. All microphones had wind protection.

A rough cut (string out) of the podcast was edited by myself with feedback from the team. The final mix was handled by another team in the US, where they added the final elements like music and the show host's final recording.
