DBLG once again look after the yearly ident for the BFI London Film Festival, having worked it on each year since 2017. ‘The BFI‘s London Film Festival is a refreshingly different kind of festival. It’s far-reaching, diverse and reflects London’s own belief that everyone is welcome.’

A bold visual identity for one of the world’s most iconic film festivals.

The audio brief was reasonably open with keywords provided to help with direction ‘Celebratory, Cinematic, Anticipation, Richness & Inspiring’ to keep in mind.

Anticipation meant the sound had to build slowly at the right pace coinciding with the slow unveiling of the logo triangle shapes. These glassy stacarto sounds are constantly speeding up and slowing down in sync with the visuals. An arpeggiated lead synth sound further drives this creating tension until the celebratory crescendo near the end peaks.

The cinematic feel was achieved using instrumentation that had classic film heritage appeal, rich orchestral strings layered with a more modern but vintage-sounding analogue synth pad, created on the Prophet 6. Low clean sine sub-bass drives the powerful bottom end with deep notes that were carefully mixed for full-range cinema sound systems for richness. Two mixes were provided, one optimised for online streaming media and another with levels more suitable for cinema (maximum 82 dBleq[m]). An alternative 5-second cutdown version was also created.
