Back again for another studio collaboration with the Leeds based Northforge. A cinematic and moody piece featuring their favourite rum, named for a legendary sea monster. Known for its deadly tentacles, razor sharp teeth and insatiable appetite, the Kraken was rumored to have attacked a ship in the Caribbean Islands carrying spiced rum.

Strong, rich and smooth, the black color takes its hue from the mysterious ink with which, as legend has it, the Kraken covered its prey.
Tentacle sounds used various single hit slime and vegetables squashing, fed into Sound Particles creating complex and longer material. A deflated large silicon inflatable bouncing ball that when shaken, sounded like ‘wet flesh’ movements. Subtle monster voice sounds resulted from this same recording after textural processing and modulation in HourGlass. Sub impact sounds create a deeper richness in the mix.

For the liquid sloshing, liquid sounds were processed using a suitable IR reverb response, to make it sound spatially more like the inside of a real bottle. Subtle glass movements for tentacles touching and handling the glass were added.

Audio routing was configured so low frequencies from the SFX take priority, dynamically ducking similar low frequencies from the music elements. This means SFX and music elements don't occupy the same frequency space at the same time, resulting in a cleaner and more impactful mix.

Reversed orchestral instruments establish an introduction into the scene before a growling, aggressive bass lead punctuates the impact of the Kraken's tentacles (created using the Soma Lyra 8). This is EQ filtered in places that need a slight pause to soften the tone; allowing for moments of calm and dynamics as the story unfolds, much like the ebb and flow of waves in the sea.

A pounding beat anchors a rhythmic foundation as the Kraken drives the bottle out of the sea beneath. Another Lyra 8 generated distorted sound rises in pitch ending the action before the Kraken is heard entering the water swells of the black deep.
