‘Big thanks to @722_modeling for the car model and @goon_cgi for the adapted version which sparked off the original inspiration for this piece….Go check them out! Took the model and replaced all the materials with flat shaders, some sketch and toon effects and a few other bits and bobs to give the car more of graphical aesthetic. This project pays homage to the boxy charm of classic car design, particularly the iconic Lancia Delta. The sound design and mix for this animated BMW E30 involved leveraging the highly detailed Engine Simulator software and its community-created patches.

Engine Sound Creation:
  • Engine Simulator & Community Patches: The project utilised Engine Simulator and the exceptional "BMW S58B30T0" patch by Supernalboot to capture the desired engine sound.
  • Extensive Driving Simulation: A 10-minute simulated driving session recording the output extracted all necessary sound elements, including revs, gear changes, acceleration/deceleration, covering a range of driving styles for animation integration.

Sound Design & Mixing Techniques:
  • Doppler Whooshes: Pass-by Doppler effects were created from the driving simulation recordings to enhance the sense of movement.
  • Overpass IR Reverb: An impulse response (IR) reverb specifically designed for overpasses was used to recreate the correct reverberation when the car travels under the bridge.
  • Detailed SFX Integration: Additional sound effects, such as pedal clunks, air whooshes, and tire screeches, were layered to elevate the experience of speed during the animation.
